Memorial Day weekend couponing

You may already know we will not have coupon inserts in Sunday's paper.  How do you add to your coupon inventory anyway?  Here are some ideas:

Check the Sunday paper.  Many stores have coupons printed in their sales ads, and I am hoping there will be some good sales at several stores for the holiday weekend. 

Get some magazines. 
All You magazine at Walmart, $1.88 + tax (at the 7th St. Walmart, but I expect the same price at all Walmarts in the area).  The cover shows '$91.60 worth of coupons'.  Besides some very interesting articles about saivng money, the June issue is packed with coupons including:

Finding Free Deals

At a coupon gathering on 5/26, one of our members mentioned how she hasn't been able to get anything free yet. We talked about a few ideas for finding deals.  Here are a couple:

Keep your eyes open for the word 'Free' anywhere in a sales ad.  One type of 'free' is when you pay the ad price for an item, and the amount you paid is returned to you in the form of a future coupon.  At Walgreen's this is called Register Rewards, and at CVS its called ExtraBucks (assuming you use an ExtraBucks card).  Think of these coupons in the same way as cash - almost.  Usually you cannot use the coupons on items such as gift cards, postage stamps, alcohol and dairy (the exclusions are printed on the coupon) - or tax.  However, they are good for nearly everything else.  And as you get going with couponing, you'll find plenty of deals at these 2 stores which make it worthwhile to pursue these types of sales, where you can earn and then apply these coupons toward future purchases. 

Some things to be aware of with these coupons: 
1) be sure to use them by the expiration date;
2) (if its a taxable item) you'll pay tax on the full price; so, just because you buy a $9.00 razor that comes with a $9.00 register reward, it still costs you $.70.
3) Some of these coupons will not 'roll', that is, you cannot use it to purchase another of the same item you earned it for.  
4) At Walgreen's, you can only use the number of manufacturer & Register Rewards coupons combined, as you have in number of items for your purchase.  That is, if you have 2 manufacturer coupons and 2 Register Rewards, you need to purchase 4 items.

CVS
Walgreens:

Another type of deal is 'Buy 1 Get 1 Free' sales, combined with a B1G1 coupon. When a store has a B1G1 deal, you usually pay for the cost of one item, and the register system reduces the total bill by deducting the second item.  When you have a coupon for B1G1 for that same item, use it on this purchase!  The register rings up 2 items, discounts 1 item, and the cashier reduces your total by the amount of 1 item - net result is that the price of both items have been reduced off of your total bill.  (Assuming the item is taxable) you still need to pay the tax on both, though.


Whenever I see a coupon insert which includes a B1G1 coupon for something I'll use -- I automatically buy 2 more papers.  They are valuable. 

Scolaris:
Scolari's doubles many coupons up to $1.00, so you may be able to find some free, or low-cost deals here.  They will not double coupons over $1.00, or coupons that have 'DO NOT DOUBLE' printed on them, as well as a few other exclusions.  I've bought yakisoba for free using this strategy.

CVS:
This week the CVS scanner/coupon printer was printing a coupon for a free CVS bag tag.  Buy one of these, and attach it to any reusable bag.  From now on, take this bag with you on your CVS shopping trip, and have it scanned during checkout.  For every 4th time you use it, a $1.00 ExtraBuck will print on the bottom of your receipt.  Use it for free soda or a pack of gum, or $1.00 off most anything on your next trip. 

You may want to search some of the couponing websites for information about stacking coupons.  In many cases, stacking can result in a free purchase as well.

Finally, I hope you consider subscribing to the online version of All You's daily deals: 
All You Daily Free Sample
An email is sent to you daily, with a link to a daily free deal.  Sometimes these deals link to a manufacturer's website, where you can print a coupon or be mailed a free sample.  Sometimes, the link is to a Facebook product page you need to 'Like' in order to receive a sample.  Sometimes you need to complete a survey.  It's up to you to determine how much information you choose to share, in order to receive a freebie, but I must say, since I've been receiving free samples of items, it gives me a chance to a) try something new that I wouldn't have tried otherwise, and b) receive a sample item for free, which sometimes comes with a coupon!

Different papers, different coupons

Different newspapers may contain different coupons.  Here is a listing of my coupon inventory from this weekend's Reno Gazette Journal ($1.50) and the San Francisco Chronicle ($3.00).  I like to get a couple of SFC's on Sunday to add to the mix of coupons I get from the RGJ.  Just as an example of how this has helped me this weekend - the Chronicle has a coupon for Complete Multipurpose Solution $1/1, which is at Walgreen's for $7.99 (less $8.00 Register Rewards), which makes the eye solution a money-maker for me.  Also included are C&H Sugar $.55/1, several Suave coupons (deals at Walgreens and CVS), and other miscellaneous coupons that made the $6.00 purchase for 2 copies of the Chronicle well-worthwhile, just this week.

Coupons and Newspapers

Have you ever wondered why we don’t get all of the coupons in our Sunday paper that are listed in the online coupon preview?  (Do you look at the online preview?)  Sunday Coupon Preview

Advertising agencies target customers based on region, and their coupon offerings reflect that.  So the coupons we receive in Nevada are not going to be the exact selection that prints in Georgia or Maine.  In addition, sometimes the ‘cents off’ will be higher in some areas, or lower in others.  Online previews give us a general representation of what’s coming in the Sunday paper, with the disclaimer that actual inserts will be slightly different based on region.  People who use these preview services regularly are aware of this. 

Just to give you some sense of the variations between the preview, and what is in the actual inserts in Reno and San Francisco, I am providing an unverified listing of the differences, below.  Your results may vary. 

Bottom line:  each paper has a few coupons that are not in the other.  There are also a few coupons that were in a preview but did not end up in either paper, and a few coupons that were not in the preview but were included in both papers (I did not list these).

If you are looking for coupon variety, perhaps one way to find them is to get a different Sunday paper.

Couponing is a Second (or Third) Language

I was thinking back to some weeks ago when I first started seriously looking for internet articles about ‘extreme couponing’.  I found a few sites, which led me to Facebook pages, which led me to blogs.  And in many of the blogs I read, there was some sort of secret handshake code language going on:

At Wags this week:  Use 2 $2/1 from 03/24 SS and $1/2 store printable here. Buy 2 pay $7.98, get $4 RR, MM!

Huh?

Translation:

At Walgreens, use two, $2 off (1 item) coupons from the March 24 SmartSource coupon inserts (they assumed I had obtained multiple copies of these inserts at the time and actually kept them!).  Click the blue link to display a store website where you can print another $1 store coupon for the purchase of 2 of these items.  Then, buy 2 items @$7.98, and with coupons and the $4 in Register Rewards you receive after checkout, this purchase is a money maker!

Based on this translation, the numbers make sense when the item is a food product with no tax. However, when it is a taxable item, you will be charged the tax on the $7.98 amount.  Using Washoe County’s 2011 tax rate of 7.725%, an additional $.62 will apply to a taxable purchase.  

 So you won’t be able to retire on these savings.  But if you think of the $4 RR coupon as if it is cash, you got paid to take the purchase out of the store.  Count your blessings!
